Ancient coin collecting was once considered the hobby of kings, and indeed it WAS in the post Renaissance period. The hobby still enjoys a certain prestige in the collecting world, but it no longer is a hobby where wealth is a prerequisite to successful pursuit. Ancient coins of great historical interest often sell in today's market for less than the price of a video tape, a popular novel, or a round of golf. As a form of entertainment, ancient coin collecting is hard to beat. The key to success as a collector of ancient coins today is knowledge. It is not necessary to earn a PhD in the classics, nor to memorize copious facts and historical details. What IS necessary, to build a really top notch collection without spending a king's ransom, is FOCUS. The collector who selects an area of special interest, learns all that can be learned about that specialty, and stays with it for the long term, will inevitably build a collection which will be rewarding, important, and not necessarily expensive. If you are intrigued, but don't know where to start, visit our section listing Numismatic Literature for the ancient coin collector. We offer a series of introductory books that are written for the beginner and are widely acclaimed for their readability. If you want to hold an inexpensive ancient coin or two in your hand while you take that arm-chair journey through time, check out our Specials page. If you really want to jump into the fire with both feet, or if you already have a specialty that you collect, check out our fixed price and auction pages where you will find links to an ever-changing variety of interesting coins, books and artifacts for sale with fair prices and no games played.
